UK Study Visa for South Africans

Pursuing higher education abroad is a dream for many South African students, and the United Kingdom, with its world-renowned universities, diverse cultural landscape, and rich history, is an attractive choice. However, before starting your academic journey, you will need to navigate the UK study visa process. To know more about a UK study visa and how to obtain it, read more.

What is a UK study visa?

A UK study visa allows international students like South Africans to study in licensed higher educational institutions in the United Kingdom. It was formerly known as the Tier 4 (General) Student Visa, but it has been replaced by the UK Student Route points-based visa.  This was introduced as part of the UK’s post-Brexit immigration reforms. So if you’re a South African planning to study in the UK, you need to apply under the new student route points-based system.

Eligibility requirements

To qualify for the UK Student Route visa, South African applicants need to fulfil the following criteria:

  1. The applicants must score a minimum of 70 points to qualify for this visa. Points are allocated based on specific criteria:
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) – 50 Points:

South African students are required to secure a document from an authorised UK educational institution, which serves as confirmation of their acceptance into an accredited course of study.

  • Financial Requirements – 10 Points:

Applicants are required to show they have enough money for their study fees and living costs in the UK. They need to prove they can afford the tuition for at least the first year, or for the whole course if it’s shorter than a year, and also have a certain amount of money for other living expenses.

  • English Language Proficiency – 10 Points:

South African students must be proficient in English to study in the UK. They can prove their English ability by passing an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) or by fulfilling the English language criteria of their selected university, provided it’s recognised for its adherence to regulations.

  1. Valid passport or travel document
  2. The applicants must be 16 or above. Those aged 16 or 17 may need parental consent.
  1. Tuberculosis test

Application Process

The application process is straightforward but demands meticulous attention to detail to ensure that all requirements are fully satisfied.

  1. Choose a course and institution
  2. Obtain a CAS
  3. Prepare financial evidence
  4. Complete the online application
  5. Attend a biometric appointment at a UK Visa Application Centre in South Africa
  6. Receive a decision in around three weeks

When to apply?

If you’re a South African planning to study in the UK, you can apply for a visa as early as 6 months before your course start date. This time frame allows sufficient processing time. Typically, you will receive a decision on your visa application within 3 weeks.

How long can you stay?

Upon the approval of your visa, you can move to the UK. You can stay there for the duration of your study. There is a possibility for an extension of up to 2 years if you pursue further studies. When that time is up, you have to go back to South Africa or get a new visa.
